I really enjoy this series as well. It makes fun of the nerdiness of scientists and if you would take away the exaggeration it would sometimes come close to reality.
I sometimes think it is true that scientist tend to concentrate too much on their own subject and just spend too much time with people who study the same subject. I'm studying chemistry and sometimes I'm really sick of talking about chemistry. Then I'm very happy to have non-chemist-friends whith whom I never talk about my subject.
I think the jokes of Big Bang theorie are sometimes a bit more funnier if you understand the background of the joke, but I think even without there are a lot of funny things in this series.

I loved it a lot! and I think the show altered my impression of nerds. they acturally can be very sexy and humourous.

I adored Sheldon, esp the bazinga episode, haha.
BUT now, season 4 completely jumped the shark for me.
my new favorite is Community and I think it's better than the new season of BBT, in some way!
