There is no doubt that modern technology has caused a variety of environmental issues, both in cities and towns. Ironically, I feel that technology can address some of these problems but at the same time, personal effort is a must.

毫無疑問，現代科技已經在城市和城鎮中引發了各種各樣的環境問題。具有諷刺意味的是，我覺得技術可以解決其中的一些問題，但同時，個人的努力是必須的。

Theoretically, addressing some environmental issues by adopting simple lifestyles is sensible. According to the statistics, during the last 100 years, the earth’s surface temperature has risen dramatically because of human activities. Therefore, some people feel that the changes in our lifestyles can reverse this worrying trend. For example, the growing number of vehicles on the road emits a large quantity of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which will worsen the air quality. If residents chose other modes of transport, like buses or subways, this serious condition would be alleviated to a large extent. However, in my opinion, this policy would be very unpopular with some people, especially those living in the suburb, who do need to travel on roads.

從理論上講，采用簡單的生活方式解決一些環境問題是明智的。據統計，在過去的100年中，由于人類活動，地球表面溫度急劇上升。因此，一些人認為我們生活方式的改變可以扭轉這種令人擔憂的趨勢。例如，越來越多的機動車排放出大量的溫室氣體，如二氧化碳，這將使空氣質量惡化。如果居民選擇其他交通方式，比如公共汽車或地鐵，這種嚴重的情況將會在很大程度上得到緩解。然而，在我看來，這項政策將會非常不受歡迎，尤其是那些住在郊區的人，他們確實需要在公路上旅行。

While it is undeniable that an individual’s behavior has a profound effect on the environment, other people argue that the improvement in technology can tackle some problems in turn. For example, the technology today is available to produce electric cars that would be both quieter and cleaner to use. Persuading manufacturers and travelers to adopt this new technology would be a more effective strategy for improving air quality fundamentally.

不可否認的是，個人的行為對環境產生了深遠的影響，而其他人則認為技術的進步可以反過來解決一些問題。例如，今天的技術可以生產出更安靜、更清潔的電動汽車。說服制造商和旅行者采用這種新技術，將是一種從根本上改善空氣質量的更有效的策略。

My own view is that apart from individual effort and environmental friendly technologies, we need to do more, such as introducing related laws and regulations. Environmental problems are so complex that each effort should be combined together to win the battle.

我個人的觀點是，除了個人努力和環保技術之外，我們還需要做更多的工作，比如引入相關的法律和法規。環境問題是如此復雜，每一項努力都應該結合在一起才能贏得這場戰役。
