本句是由but連接的表轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系的兩個(gè)分句。第一個(gè)分句的主干為the…manager…was in moredirect relation with…，acting for是現(xiàn)在分詞作后置定語修飾manager。第二個(gè)分句的主干為…h(huán)e hadseldom... knowledge of the workmen.，定語從句which the employer bad often had...慘飾前面的that familiar personal knowledge,passing away是現(xiàn)在分詞短語作后置定語修飾前面的familybusiness。under the more patriarchal system of the old family business是介詞短語作狀語，修飾謂語had often had。
