Poems and Passages of Life

A Grain of Sand
     by William Blake

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild fllower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Love Your Life
      Henry David Thoreau

However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and call it hard names.It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest.The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life,poor as it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant,thrilling,glorious hourss,even in a poor-house.The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there,and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace.The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving.Most think that they are above being supported by the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.Cultivate poverty like a garden herb,like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things,whether clothes or friends,Turn the old,return to them.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

The life I desired
       William Somerset Maugham

That must be the story of innumerable couples,and the pattern of lifeof life it offers has a homely grace.It reminds you of a placid rivulet,meandering smoohtly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees,till at last it falls into the vasty sea;but the sea is so calm,so silent,so infifferent,that you are troubled suddently by a vague uneasiness.Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature,strong in me even in those days,that i felt in such an existence,the share of the great majority,something amiss.I recognized its social value.I saw its ordered happiness,but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course.There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights.In my heart was desire to live more dangerously.I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous,shoals it I could only have change-change and the exicitement of unforeseen.

Virtue 美德
     G.Herbert/

Sweet day,so cool,so calm,so bright!
The bridal of the earth and sky-
The dew shall weep thy fall to-night; 今宵的露珠兒將為你的消逝而落淚;
For thou must die.
Sweet rose,whose hue angry and brave,
Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye,
Thy root is ever in its grave,
And thou must die.
Sweet spring,full of sweet days and roses,
A box where sweets compacted lie,
My music shows ye have your closes,
And all must die,
Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
Like season'd timber,never gives; 猶如干燥備用的木料,永不走樣;
But though the whole world turn to coal,
Then chiefly lives.

The country Maid and Her Milk Can
A country maid was walking along with a can of milk upon her head,when she fell into the following train of reflections."The money for which I shall sell this milk will enable me to increase my stock of eggs to three hundred,These eggs,allowing for what may prove addle,and what may be destroyed by vermin,will produce at least two hundred and fifty chickens.The chickens will be fit to carry to market just at the time when poultry is always dear;so that by the new year I cannot fail of having money enough to purchase a new gown.Green-let me consider-yes,green becomes my complexion best .and green it shall be, In this dress I will go to the fair,where all young fellows will strive to have me for a parter;but no-I shall refuse every one of them,and with a disdainful toss turn from them."
Transported with this idea,she could not forbear acting with her head the thought that passed in her mind,when down came the can of milk!And all her imaginary happiness vanished in a moment.

The Rainy Day
     by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The day is cold,and dark,and dreary;
It rains,and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.
My life is cold and dark and dreary;
It rains and the wind is never weary;
My though still cling to the moldering past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still,sad heart!And cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、陰暗、沉悶;
下著雨,風也刮個不停;
我的生活寒冷、陰郁、沉悶;
下著雨,風也刮個不停;
安靜吧,憂傷的心!別再悔恨;
烏云后面太陽依然輝煌燦爛;

Love 愛情
I love you not because of who you are,but because of who I am when I am with you.
No man or woman is worth your tears,and the one who is ,won't make you cry.
The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.
Never frown,even when you are sad,because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.
To the world you may be one person,but to one person you may be the world.
Don't waste your time on a man/woman,who isn't willing to waste their time on you.
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to,doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
Don't try to hard,the best things come when you least expect them to.
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one,so that when we finally meet the person,we will know how to be grateful.
Don't cry because it is over,smile because it happened.
Life is a pure flame,and we live by an invisible sun within us.-------Sir Thomas Browne

On the Feeling of Immortality in youth
                       William Hazlitt

No young man believes he shall ever die.It was a saying of my brother's,and a fine one.There is a feeling of Eternity in youth,which makes us amend for everything.To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods.One half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains instore for us with all its countless treasures;for there is no line drawn,and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes.We make the coming age our own-

The vast,the unbounded prospect lies before us.

Death.old age.are words without a meaning.that pass by us like the idea air which we regardnot.Others may have undergone,or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life",whichlaughs to scorn all such sickly fancies.As in setting out on delightful journey,we strain our eager gaze forward-

Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!

-and see no end to the landscape,new objects presenting themselves as we advance;so,in the commencement of life,we set no bounds to our inclinations.nor to the unrestricted opportunities of grastifying them.we have as yet found no obstacle,no disposition to flag;and it seems that we can go on so forever.We look round in a new world,full of life,and motion,and ceaseless progress;and feel in ourselves all the vigour and spirit to keep pace with it,and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things,decline into old age,and drop into the grave.It is the simplicity,and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth,that(so to speak)identifies us with nature ,and(our experience being slight and our passions strong)deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it.Our short-lives connexion with existence we fondly flatter ourselves,is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness,jar,nor separation.As infants smile and sleep,we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies,and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects press around us,filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

A Forever Friend

"A friend walk in when the rest of the world walks out."
Sometimes in life,
You find a special friend;
你會找到一個特別的朋友;
Someone who changes your life just by being part of it.
Someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop;
他會把你逗得開懷大笑;
Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world.
Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it.
This is Forever Friendship.
when you're down,
and the world seems dark and empty,
Your forever friend lifts you up in spirits and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full.
Your forever friend gets you through the hard times,the sad times,and the confused times.
If you turn and walk away,
Your forever friend follows,
If you lose you way,
Your forever friend guides you and cheers you on.
Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay.
And if you find such a friend,
You feel happy and complete,
Because you need not worry,
Your have a forever friend for life,
And forever has no end.
