when world war i broke out in 1914, british war secretary horatio kitchener designed a recruitment poster which portrayed him as a tough general pointing his index finger at the viewer, with the words"britons(kitchener) wants you. join your country's army!" the caption was like a command and instilled a feeling of nationalism and patriotism in the minds of the people. the word"you" in bold letters, ordered each and every citizen to be at the service of the country at the time when it needed them most. believe it or not, the poster encouraged 3,000,000 men to volunteer to join the army.
kitchener's poster spawned, in 1917, the famous recruitment poster for the united states army, which showed uncle sam in a similar pose.
