Sometime before the Second World War, Montgomery was commanding a battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in Egypt. One of his young officers was, in Montgomery's view, doing himself no good by being out too often with the girls. So he gave the officer an order not to have another woman without his permission, though if he thought it necessary he would give it.Some weeks later, Montgomery was dining in Cairo with the British ambassador in Egypt when the butler announced that there was a telephone call for Colonel Montgomery. The ambassador said,"Ask who it is and what he wants."The butler returned and gravely announced:"It is lieutenant X and he wants to ask the Colonel if he can have a woman."Permission was granted.
第二次世界大戰(zhàn)前，蒙哥馬利在埃及任英國皇家沃里克郡軍團一營軍隊的指揮官，覺得手下一名年輕軍官出外和女人廝混太多，不知自愛，于是命令這軍官不得再和女人上床，除非事前獲得他許可。假如蒙哥馬利認為有需要，會許可他的要求。幾個星期之后，蒙哥馬利在開羅和英國駐埃及大使一起晉餐。管家走來說，有電話找蒙哥馬利上校。大使說：「問問他是誰，想怎么樣。」管家回來，一臉嚴說：「他是××中尉，想向蒙哥馬利上校請示可不可以和女人上床。」他如愿以償。
