in 1802, napoleon sent an expedition to regain control of the colony of st dominique. the freed slaves under toussaint l'ouverture were no match for the crack french troops, but the french had to face a much deadlier foe: mosquitoes.
spring rains gave rise to clouds of mosquitoes and an outbreak of yellow fever. while the locals were largely immune, the french perished by tens of thousands. after toussaint l'ouverture's kidnap by the french, his army rallied behind the leadership of his former general dessalines, and renewed the fight against their greatly weakened enemy. between the disease and the fighting some 50000 french soldiers died and the rest surrendered in 1803. on 1 january 1804, eight months after toussaint l'ouverture's death in a french prison, st dominique declared independence as haiti.
