war is usually young people's business. but in the american revolution, old people took part too.
on 19 april 1775, british forces were returning to boston from the battles of lexington and concord when they were spotted by samuel whittemore. though 80 years old and crippled, whittemore immediately loaded his musket, and fired from behind a nearby stone wall, killing one soldier. he then drew his duelling pistols and killed two more. having no time left to reload before the soldiers advanced to him, he drew his sword and attacked. he was shot in the face, bayoneted 13 times, and left for dead.
after the british left, villagers found him still alive, and took him to a doctor, who held out no hope for his survival. but whittemore lived another 18 years - long enough to see the british defeated.
