on 19 october 1864, general early's confederate army launched a surprise attack against the union forces at cedar creek, putting them to rout, and the union commander general wright was wounded.
union general philip sheridan, coming back from a conference in washington, was watering his horse at a small stream near winchester, some twenty miles away from cedar creek, when he heard that a battle was in progress. without waiting for more information, he got on his horse and sped away in the direction of the battle. he picked up fleeing soldiers along the way and arrived on the battlefield in time to rally the troops. in the end, the confederacy suffered a crushing defeat.
