after agreeing on the surrender terms, confederate general robert lee told union general ulysses grant that for the past few days he had nothing to give his men to eat. thereupon grant called in his supply officer and told him to send to lee's army enough food for 25000 men.
when lee returned to his army, men began to cheer. but the cheering died when the soldiers saw the sorrow on the old man's face. tears filled lee's eyes. "boys," he said, "i have done the best i could for you. go home now. and if you make as good citizens as you have soldiers, you will do well. i shall always be proud of you. goodbye. and god bless you."
