one day in 1943, general patton, then in command of america's forces in italy, was given a tour of the hospital in sant'agata. among the patients was a man who appeared to be perfectly well. "i want to get that man out of bed right away," patton ordered. "get him back to the front. i won't have these men who really are wounded see that man babied so." when the patient igored his plea, patton struck him in the face - and was horrified to learn that he was seriously shell-shocked.
eisenhower was furious and ordered patton to apologise to all his men. though the general dutifully assembled his troops, the loyal men utterly refused to let him speak, cheering and whooping every time he tried. patton's eyes welled with appreciative tears and at last he simply turned and left. the patient also forgave his general, saying, "he was suffering a little mental fatigue himself."
