napoleon, irked at attempts to assassinate him on the part of the exiled royalists of france, decided to execute one of them as an object lesson. therefore, against the advice of fouche, chief of his secret police, he had his agents seize duc d'enghien, a young member of the royal family, who was innocent of any wrongdoing. in seizing him, napoleon's agents had to cross the border and violate the neutrality of the small german state of baden. the duke was given a farcical trial and was shot.
