simon cameron served as secretary of war under president lincoln, and there was some question as to his integrity. indeed, thaddeus stevens, a pennsylvania congressman, was reported to have said that cameron would steal anything but a red-hot stove.
that came to cameron's ears, and he complained to lincoln. there was nothing much that lincoln could do except suggest to stevens that he might care to say he had been misquoted.
stevens, a curmudgeon of a man, promptly agreed to state that he had been misquoted in order to keep the peace within the party. what he had really said, stevens explained, was that cameron would steal anything, including a red-hot stove.
