in the war of the spanish succession, prince eugene of savoy once condemned to death a soldier caught looting. the duke of marlborough, the prince's war partner, interceded to save his life. eugene replied, "if you have not executed more men than i have done for this offence, i will pardon the man." the duke was convinced that the man was saved. however, it was found that eugene had executed far less men. he said to the duke, "there, you see the benefit of example. you pardon many and therefore have to execute many; i never pardon one, and therefore few dare to offend."
西班 牙 王 位 繼 承 戰 爭 期 間 ， 薩 伏 伊 國 王 歐 仁 判 了 一 名 士 兵 死 刑 ： 這 士 兵 犯 禁 搶 掠 ， 當場 被 捕 。 歐 仁 的 戰 爭 盟 友 馬 爾 伯 勒 公 爵 為 他 說 情 ， 請 饒 性 命 。 歐 仁 說 ： 「 因 搶 掠 罪名 處 死 的 部 下 ， 你 假 如 不 比 我 多 ， 我 就 饒 他 。 」 馬 爾 伯 勒 公 爵 深 信 那 士 兵 可 免 一 死， 不 料 卻 發 覺 歐 仁 處 死 者 比 他 少 得 多 。 歐 仁 告 訴 他 說 ： 「 罰 一 懲 眾 的 效 用 ， 你 現 在可 以 看 到 了 。 你 寬 恕 的 人 多 ， 要 處 死 的 也 多 ； 我 一 個 不 饒 ， 所 以 膽 敢 犯 禁 者 少 。 」
