king pyrrhus of epirus used elephants as a shock tactic against his enemies. but elephants were a rather unreliable weapon because of their tendency to run amok on the battlefield.
during pyrrhus' siege of argos, an elephant called nicon had lost his master, who had been wounded several times and had fallen off. nicon rampaged through the crowd till at length he found the body of his master. he lifted him up from the ground with his trunk, and carrying him upon his two tusks, furiously trod all under foot he found in the way, killing friends and foes alike.
伊庇魯斯國王皮拉斯對敵會出動大象，以收震懾效果。但大象在戰場上有時會發狂，不是十分可靠的武器。
