on 28 june 1914, archduke franz ferdinand, heir to the austro-hungarian throne, visited bosnia, which had been annexed by the austro-hungarian empire. a bosnian nationalist tossed a grenade at his car, but the archduke deftly batted it away. it exploded, and injured one of his aides. the archduke continued on, but soon decided to alter his schedule and visit the injured aide in the hospital. unfamiliar with the route, his driver took a wrong turn. an official shouted,"that's the wrong way," and the driver stopped the car.unfortunately, it did so right in front of another would-be assassin, who drew his pistol and fired. mortally wounded, the archduke muttered"it's nothing", and then lost consciousness. his death triggered world war i, which would claim more than 10 million lives. all because of a wrong turn.
