penalties for joining the resistance were severe throughout nazi-occupied europe. in october 1941, for example, 48 people were shot at chateaubriant(1) in revenge for one assassinated german colonel. interrogation at the hands of the gestapo might include beatings with truncheons, electric shock treatment or the dislocation of limbs.
however, the resistance achieved some spectacular results. in 1943, for example, a party of nine men attacked the norsk hydro plant in norway, destroying its tanks of heavy water, which were needed in german experiments to make an atomic bomb.(2) when the occupiers tried to move their last supplies of heavy water to germany, the ferry carrying them was also destroyed-- and with it all hitler's nuclear ambitions.
