Although sales at both ASEF Chemicals andChemicon Ltd experienced a number of fluctuationsover the period 1995-1999, turnover at bothcompanies showed a general upword trend.
At the beginning of the period ASEF sales stoodat just over $30m. They experienced a fall thefollowing year, before picking up again in 1997 andreaching a peak of $60m in 1998. Sales fell againslightly the following year but remained higher thantheir 1997 level. Chemicon sales exceeded those ofASEF in 1995 ($42m compared to $31m). Despiteexperiencing a fall in 1997, the overall trend was a slight rise over the four year period. Bothcompanies ended 1999 with turnover of around $50m with Chemicon outselling ASEF for thefirst time since 1996.

The areas under consideration are thepurchase of new computers, the provision oflanguage training courses and the payment ofspecial bonuses.

The majority of company computers are quitenew and fast enough to handle the work done onthem. Consequently, new computers would not berecommended.
Language training courses
The company aims to increase exports, particularly in Spain and France. Therefore,Language training courses would be an excellent idea for those employees who deal withbusiness partners and customers overseas. In addition, training courses would increasemotivation: staff would enjoy the lessons and perceive that the company in investing in them.Therefore, language training would be an option.
Special bonus payments
Although special bonus payments would have a beneficial impact on motivation, theywould have no direct effect on the companys operations. There are also potential problemsconcerning the selection of staff eligible for the payments and the setting of a precedent forfuture payments. Therefore, bonus payments would not be advisable.
Recommendations
It is felt that the best solution for the company and staff would be to invest in languagetraining. It is suggested that the company should organise course in French and Spanish.Those employees who have contact with partners and customers should be assured of placesbut other invested members of staff should also be allowed to attend.
