BEC即劍橋商務英語證書考試，是劍橋大學考試委員會(UCLES)設立的。很多人誤認為BEC考試針對是那些學與商務有關的專業人員的，其實不然。因為無論你學的專業是什么，都要在某個特定的商務環境中運用，BEC考查的正是這種普遍存在的商務環境中應具備的通識與能力。劍橋大學考試委員會設立BEC考試的目的是在全球范圍內建立一個測試商界雇員英語水平的統一標準，使BEC證書被跨國公司和非英語國家的大公司用作商務英語測試標準，以評估在真實商務環境下雇員的英語水平，使人力資源部門能準確評估雇員商務英語的運用技能。因此，與我國的四、六級考試相比較，BEC考試更側重對英語實際運用能力的考查。
