Some people believe that students who want to attend colleges or universities after graduation from high school should spend one year taking a job to gain work experience or traveling to enlarge their vision. Discuss the advantage and disadvantage of this practice.
High school is the second phrase of one’s formal learning process. It is normal for most students to enter university or start work after graduation from high school. However, some people propose that students should spend one year taking a job to gain experience or traveling to enlarge their vision. There are both advantages and disadvantages for this practice.
Some students may not know what subject they are interested in. Taking a job may help them realize their interest areas and avoid blindness. It is often common to see students change mind after they study their major for a year or so. Switching to a new major is not only a waste of money, but a waste of time. Moreover, the work experience they gain may help them understand the knowledge they acquire in class. On the other hand, if they know how they are going to use the knowledge, they will make more effort to master it better. On the other hand, traveling, as another real life experience, can enrich knowledge and enlarge horizons. Students can obtain what they can not learn out of textbooks in class. Though in college, students do have time to travel, yet the holidays that can be used for travel are more often than not too short for long distance trips. One year will be enough for most to travel extensively. This experience will bring them endless topics to socialize with people. What is more, both practice can help students improve their independence, enhance their problem-solving abilities and communicative skills, all of which are indispensable for a successful college life.
However, problems also exist. Students may lose their interest for study and become money-oriented ending up quitting school completely. Moreover, they may be influenced by social evils and go astray, for they are not mature enough to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong. In addition, traveling is very costly, which adds financial burden to families. There can always be unexpected difficulties and dangers in one’s journey that students might not be able to deal with. Besides, working or traveling for one year might be too long. Being away from school for too long may damage their academic performance in the future. Study needs to be a constant process.
In summary, there are both benefits and harms. Students or parents need to balance all these positive and negative aspects and make their own decision.
