Should universities recruit the same numbers of female and male students in every subject? While some may respond positively, a lot more others nod their heads, saying the restriction is ridiculous. As far as I am concerned, though men and women should gain equal educational opportunities, accepting equal numbers of boys and girls in each subject is unnecessary and impossible.
The main reason is that boys and girls, possibly blessed with different modes of thinking, may represent divergent talents to learn. Studies show that most boy students are better at such courses of science as mathematics, physics,chemistry, biology and alike, making them superior specialists in these fields while in the study of language, females show their stronger side, making them outstanding translators, lawyers, teachers and orators. Therefore, it is meaningless to intentionally force these innocent students to struggle in their weaknesses.
Another reason is that physical conditions may facilitate boys in some subjects while exclude their female peers. Everyone knows mining as a subject naturally needs more boys than girls, so does piloting a plane. In contrast, no one denies that women, careful, patient and sympathetic, are by nature good at housekeeping, child rearing and nursing. To put such a number restriction is simply to act against one’s nature, and not surprisingly, the policy will turn out to be a laughingstock.
We should also pay close attention to the serious imbalance in the numbers of males and females in the contempory society, especially in china, where girls greatly outnumber boys, for traditionally, the latter are regarded as the props of their families. So even if universities really plan to enlist the same numbers of boy and girl students, there may not be the same numbers of female and male students there to be choosen.
From what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that accepting equal numbers of male and female students in every subject is unnecessary and impossible.(324W)
