When asked to send something representative of their country to an international exhibition, most people tend to think of specific objects. However,I would send something completely different: one week’s worth of television programming. I feel that TV programs are a good representation of my country because they show how we live, what we value, and what we teach our children.

TV programs also show what we value in my country. Comedy programs, for instance, demonstrate what we think is funny, while documentaries show what issues we are concerned about and how we want to resolve them. Sports programs show which sports are more and less popular as well as how we approach competition. In general, the range of programs that appear on TV demonstrate what we think is important and interesting and worth our while to spend time on.

Children’s programs show what we think is important to teach our children. Some programs are designed to specifically teach reading and math skills. Others expose children to classic stories from literature or to traditional folktales. You can learn a good deal about a country by watching its television programs. You can learn about daily life, values, and education. That is why I would send a week’s worth of TV programs from my country to an international exhibition.
