Strange fits of passion have I known:
And I will dare to tell,
But in the Lover's ear alone,
What once to me befell.
When she I loved looked every day
Fresh as a rose in June,
I to her cottage bent my way,
Beneath an evening-moon.
Upon the moon I fixed my eye,
All over the wide lea;
With quickening pace my horse drew nigh
Those paths so dear to me.
And now we reached the orchard-plot;
And, as we climbed the hill,
The sinking moon to Lucy's cot
Came near, and nearer still.
In one of those sweet dreams I slept,
Kind Nature's gentlest boon!
And all the while my eyes I kept
On the descending moon.
My horse moved on; hoof after hoof
He raised, and never stopped:
When down behind the cottage roof,
At once, the bright moon dropped.
What fond and wayward thoughts will slide
Into a Lover's head!
"O mercy!" to myself I cried,
"If Lucy should be dead!"

我曾體驗(yàn)過(guò)奇異的激情：
我要訴說(shuō)我的一次經(jīng)歷，
但這只講給戀愛(ài)的人聽(tīng)，
對(duì)他們我不想有所隱蔽。
那時(shí)我那位最心愛(ài)的姑娘，
像六月的玫瑰一樣秀麗，
一天晚上我趁著皎潔的月光，
騎馬向她的村舍走去。
我抬頭凝望天上的明月，
月光普照著遼闊的草地；
那些路徑對(duì)我是多么親切，
我的馬跑得越來(lái)越急。
而當(dāng)我縱馬馳近那果園；
當(dāng)我登上山岡遙望天際，
我見(jiàn)月亮正向西天沉落，
向露西的小屋漸漸偏移。
我仿佛置身于甜蜜的夢(mèng)境，
心中贊美著仁慈的上帝！
同時(shí)我目不轉(zhuǎn)睛地望著
漸沉的明月越來(lái)越低。
我繼續(xù)策馬向前奔馳；
向前奔馳，馬不停蹄：
突然我見(jiàn)那一輪皓月
從她屋頂上掉了下去。
充滿柔情而又荒誕的念頭，
有時(shí)會(huì)侵入戀愛(ài)者的心里！
“哦，天呵！”我失聲喊道，
“露西可別也突然死去！”

我也敢坦然訴說(shuō)
（不過(guò)，只能讓情人聽(tīng)到）
我這兒發(fā)生過(guò)什么。
那時(shí)，我情人容光煥發(fā)，
像六月玫瑰的顏色；
晚間．在淡淡月光之下
我走向她那座茅舍。
我目不轉(zhuǎn)睛，向明月注視，
走過(guò)遼闊的平蕪；
我的馬兒加快了步子，
踏上我心愛(ài)的小路。
我們來(lái)到了果園，接著
又登上一片山嶺，
這時(shí)，月亮正徐徐墜落，
臨近露西的屋頂。
我沉入一個(gè)溫柔的美夢(mèng)——
造化所賜的珍品！
我兩眼始終牢牢望定
緩緩下墜的月輪。
我的馬兒呵，不肯停蹄，
一步步奔躍向前：
只見(jiàn)那一輪明月，驀地
沉落到茅屋后邊。
什么怪念頭，又癡又糊涂，
會(huì)溜入情人的頭腦！
“天哪！”我向我自己驚呼，
“萬(wàn)一露西會(huì)死掉！”
