christian cavanagh, an irish woman, was 26 in 1691 when her husband disappeared. when she heard from him again, he was in the british army serving in holland.
disguised as a man, cavanagh joined the army to find her husband. she found him ten years later after she had participated in a number of battles. as she had grown to enjoy the life of a soldier, she stayed in the army until 1706 and the battle of ramillies. there she was badly wounded."though i suffered great torture by this wound," she wrote,"yet the discovery it caused of my sex in the fixing of my dressing by which the surgeons saw my breasts and by the largeness of my nipples concluded that i had given suck was a greater grief to me." the news that this pretty dragoon was in fact a woman soon spread, and her fighting days came to an end.
