a wagoner was driving his team when the wheel of his wagon got stuck in the mire. he called upon hercules for assistance, and the god at length appeared. "put your shoulder to the wheel," the god told him, "and goad on your horses. if you won't help yourself, you can't expect others to come to your help."
馬車夫策馬路上，車輪忽然陷入泥濘，動彈不得。他祈求赫克力士援手，最后，這位天神出現了，對他說：「你用肩膀托住車輪，驅馬前行吧。你不幫助自己，就不要指望他人相助。」
【解說】這是古希臘作家伊索（aesop）的一則寓言。伊索的身世鮮為人知，《伊索寓言》卻名聞天下，是不少英文成語的 來 源 。 例 如 上 文 to put one's shoulder to the wheel 一 語 ， 現 在 常 用 來 說 「 努 力 工 作 」 。 he put his shoulder to the wheel, and at length business began to pick up 即 「 他 努 力 工 作 ， 生 意 終 于 好 起 來 」 。 at length 二 字 合 用 ， 解 作 「 終 于 」 。
赫 克 力 士 是 希 臘 神 話 著 名 的 英 雄 。 這 位 天 帝 之 子 力 大 無 窮 ， 曾 奉 命 格 殺 巨 獅 怪 鳥 等 等 ， 所 以 ， 說 力 大 無 窮 或 任 務 艱 難 ， 英 文 常 用 herculean 一 字 ， 例 如 ： it is a herculean task to rebuild the town after the great earthquake （ 大 地 震 之 后 ， 要 重 建 這 個 城 市 ， 工 作 非 常 吃 力 ） 。
goad 是 用 來 驅 趕 牲 口 的 尖 棒 ， 作 動 詞 ， 常 指 「 激 勵 」 或 「 煽 動 」 ， 例 如 ： they goaded the workers into starting a strike （ 他 們 煽 動 工 人 罷 工 ） 。
