"call no man happy till he is dead," solon replied. he was right. when cyrus the great of persia invaded lydia, croesus was taken captive. as he was escorted to his execution, he called out to solon three times and cyrus, on hearing the explanation of this, was moved to spare his life.
里底亞最后一任國王克里薩斯豪富潑天，曾問雅典大賢梭倫：「還有人比我幸福嗎？」梭倫回答說：「人不到蓋棺那天，都不可以說幸福。」他說得對。后來波斯的居魯士大帝入侵里底亞，克里薩斯淪為階下囚，被押去處死的時候，連喊梭倫三次。居魯士問明原委，動了慈悲心，免他一死。
