the seven weeks' war in 1866 was fought between austria, seconded by some german states, and prussia, allied with italy. it was largely provoked by prussian chancellor bismarck as a way of expelling austria from the german confederation, thereby assuring prussian hegemony there.
early in the campaign, bismarck sanctioned general manteuffel's divisions to cross the elbe into austrian territory. "treat them as fellow countrymen," bismarck ordered the general, "homicidally if necessary."
一八六六年，奧地利和普魯士爆發七星期戰爭：奧地利獲一些德意志國家支持，普魯士則和義大利結盟。戰爭由普魯士首相俾斯麥挑起，旨在把奧地利逐出德意志聯盟，確立聯盟內普魯士的霸主地位。
戰爭初期，俾斯麥批準曼陀菲爾將軍率兵渡過易北河，入侵奧地利國土。他給曼陀菲爾的命令是：「對奧地利人，要像對同胞一樣，必要時就像殺同胞一樣。」
