rudolf hess was an ardent follower of hitler, and on the day germany launched world warⅡ, hitler named him second to hermann goring in the line of succession. he created a worldwide sensation, therefore, when in 1941 he stole an airplane and flew from germany to scotland in an attempt to negotiate a peace agreement with britain. his peace proposals were rejected outright by both hitler and the british government.
hess was held in britain until the nuremberg war crimes trials, 1946, when he was given a life sentence. he eventually became the only inmate in berlin's spandau prison, but the ussr rejected appeals for his release. he died in 1987. it was officially stated that he had committed suicide by strangling himself with an electric cord, but some believe he was murdered
