in september 1941, hitler appointed reinhard heydrich as the administrative head of czechoslovakia, where his inhumanity earned him the nicknames"hangman of europe" and"the beast".
in may 1942, heydrich was severely wounded in a grenade attack by two czech parachutists sent from london by the czech government-in-exile. he died of his wounds, and the nazis swore revenge. on 10 june, the ss razed to the ground the village of lidice, whose residents were known to be hostile to the occupation, and all the male residents over 16 years of age were killed. the czechs were so stunned by the nazis' brutality that they came to view resistance activities with considerably less enthusiasm, and the assassination was so unpopular that the czech government-in-exile denied all responsibility for it, even after the war.
