during the american revolution, the americans believed that their rebellious spirit would become contagious and that the citizens living in canada would join their cause and fight alongside them. following this logic, american generals benedict arnold and richard montgomery led an attack on quebec city in 1775 against the british general guy carleton.
to the americans' astonishment, when carleton issued an order that every able-bodied man in the area take up arms, most of them did so willingly, including the french-canadians. they fought with carleton to defeat the americans, ending the hope of canadian support for the american revolution.
