william hull, governor of the michigan territory, led on american army of 2500 men to fort detroit to invade canada, but surrendered without firing a shot to a british and indian force of 1330 men under general isaac brock. fear of slaughter by indian warriors, coupled with brock's bold manoeuvres, resulted in a victory as brilliant for the british as it was ignominious for the americans.
