the ghost dance was an american indian christian movement that began in 1889, when an indian named wovoka had a vision in which god assured him that the old ways would be restored, and white people would disappear. he also learned a sacred dance, which the indians should perform to hasten the new age.
the ghost dance movement spread rapidly, and caused fear among white settlers. in 1890, the american government had sioux chief sitting bull murdered. a few days later, another sioux chief big foot learned that his own arrest had been ordered. when he and about 350 of his followers tried to slip away, they were intercepted by the 7th cavalry. more than 200 of them, mostly women and children, were slaughtered at wounded knee creek. one baby was found sheltered in its dead mother's arms, still nursing at her breast.
