benedict arnold was a general in the american revolution. during the battle of saratoga in october 1777, he was relieved of his command by his superior because of insubordination. but once fighting began, he could not stay away. damning his orders, he downed a slug of rum, jumped onto a horse, and charged into battle. the sight of arnold brandishing his sabre and galloping here and there under constant fire greatly invigorated the ragtag american army, and the crack british troops collapsed. arnold was shot in his left leg, and as a result had a limp for the rest of his days.
another result of his bravery was that the french became convinced that the british could be defeated. they entered the war on the americans' side, which helped speed the infant united states to victory.
