at the outbreak of the american revolution, the little town of menotomy was a scene of geriatric heroism. two british ammunition wagons passing through the town were met by a group of old men, who called on the convoy to surrender, and opened fire when their command went unheeded, killing the trace horses and two soldiers. the survivors ran off, stopped to throw their muskets and powder into a pond, and then continued running. six grenadiers came upon an old woman named mother batherick and surrendered to her, begging for protection.
mother batherick took them to the house of the local militia captain and told them: "if you ever live to get back, you tell king george that an old woman took six of his grenadiers prisoners." the story did get back, and one english paper asked, "if one yankee woman can take six grenadiers, how many soldiers will it require to conquer america?"
