the japanese sneak attack on pearl harbour in 1941 brought a surge of patriotism in the us --- and enlistment in the armed forces. at the time, you could not join the military till the age of 17. after watching his 14-year-old brother lie his way into the navy, calvin graham followed a few months later at the age of 12.
graham was a gunner on the uss south dakota when it was buffeted by the japanese in 1942. while helping in the fire control efforts, he was struck in the jaw and mouth by shrapnel. though seriously wounded, he helped pull some crew members to safety.
the next year, the navy discovered graham's age. he spent three months in jail, and was kicked out of the navy. two days after his 13th birthday, he found himself back in school in the 7th grade.
