many black soldiers fought in the union army during the american civil war. they often faced extreme prejudice not only from the white soldiers but also from the white population of northern cities. the most famous black regiment, the 54th massachusetts, fought heroically during the siege of fort wagner in 1863 and suffered heavy casualties. one of the black soldiers wounded was first sergeant robert simmons, whose arm was shattered by a ball from a confederate rifle.
fortunately, simmons could not have known that only three days before there had been a race riot in new york city during which a white mob had attacked his mother and sister and clubbed to death his seven-year-old nephew. he died several weeks later in hospital, having given his life for the very same people who had murdered his nephew.
