as prussia grew strong under frederick the great, neighbouring countries began conspiring against him. frederick decided to strike first, thus beginning the seven years' war. in 1759, frederick suffered a disastrous defeat at kunersdorf, and it seemed that prussia would inevitably be overcome by her russian, austrian and french
opponents. many prussian soldiers deserted in despair. one such men was captured and brought before the king, who asked him why he had left the colours. "because things were going so badly for your majesty," the man replied.
frederick thought for a moment and then with a wink told the deserter, "i suggest you wait a week. then if things are no better, we'll both desert together."
