the dutch war of independence from spain lasted for some eighty years, from 1567 to 1648. in the early days the war was marked by a series of disasters for the dutch, none more severe than at the battle of jemmingen in 1568, when many fleeing dutch soldiers drowned in trying to cross the ems river. it is said that news of the dutch defeat was carried on the tide to the burghers of emden at the month of the river, where thousands of broad-brimmed felt hats, the normal headgear of the dutch infantry, were seen floating by like some stricken armada.
