davy crockett, a celebrated american folk hero, fought for texas in its struggle for independence from mexico. he was killed in 1836, when the mexicans stormed the alamo fortress. legend has it that crockett fought to the bitter end, and his body was found surrounded by 16 mexican corpses, with crockett's knife buried in one of them. the truth, however, appears to be otherwise.
according to accounts written by mexican soldiers, at the end of the battle, crockett and six other men were found in a back room, and crockett tried to talk his way out by saying that he had planned to become a loyal mexican citizen and had taken no part in the fighting. they were brought to general santa anna, who, incensed that his "take no prisoners" order had been ignored, commanded their immediate execution.
