shortly after napoleen Ⅲ 's election to the french presidency in 1848, lady blessington, english author and famous beauty, was forced by scandal to leave london and make her home in paris. as she had entertained napoleon on numerous occasions during his exile in london, she naturally expected him to reciprocate. it soon became apparent, however, that the newly elected president preferred to avoid a potentially scandalous association.
one day, the former friends bumped into one another at a formal reception. "lady blessington," napoleon politely remarked, "do you expect to stay long in paris?"by way of reply, lady blessington simply curtsied and asked, "do you?"
