while preparing for the battle of trafalgar in 1805, british admiral horatio nelson, aboard hms victory, discussed his navy's prospects with his captain, thomas masterman hardy. hardy suggested that the capture of 14 french ships might be deemed a suitable outcome. "then," nelson replied, "i shall not be satisfied with anything less than twenty."
he then sent what would prove to be the final signal of his exemplary career: "england expects every man will do his duty."
it is a testament to the exceptional quality of nelson's tactical judgement that the english fleet indeed captured exactly twenty french vessels.
