at the battle of trafalgar, british admiral nelson was hit by a bullet that entered his left shoulder, pierced his lung, and came to rest at the base of his spine. he retained consciousness for four hours, and did not die till the battle ended with a british victory. his final words were "thank god i have done my duty."
nelson's body was preserved in a cask of brandy on the voyage home to england. legend has it that it was french brandy that had been captured during the battle. upon the arrival of his body in london, nelson was given a state funeral. the bullet that killed him was removed from his body and is now on public display in windsor castle.
