after service in the peninsular war, against the usa, in greece and at home, british soldier charles napier was sent to sind, in what is now southeast pakistan. in august 1842, having annexed sind to the empire, napier sent news of his success via a legendary one-word latin message:"peccavi (i have sinned)."
his journal records: "we have no right to seize sind but we shall do so, and a very advantageous, useful, humane piece of rascality it will be."
英 國 軍 人 查 理 ． 內(nèi) 皮 爾 曾參 與 半 島 戰(zhàn) 爭 ， 曾 出 征 美 國 ， 又 曾 在 希 臘 、 英 國 本 土 服 役 ， 之 后 奉 命 到 信 德 ， 即 今日 巴 基 斯 坦 東 南 部 地 區(qū) 。 一 八 四 二 年 八 月 ， 他 把 信 德 收 入 英 帝 國 版 圖 ， 用 拉 丁 文 上書 報 捷 ， 書 中 只 有 一 個 字 ： 「 peccavi （ 余 罪 深 矣 ） 。 」
