during world war ii, jazz dancer and singer josephine baker joined the french resistance. her subsequent marriage to a jewish businessman, jean leon, attracted the attention of hermann goering, leader of the gestapo, who resolved to murder her. goering invited her to dinner, having arranged to put cyanide in her fish.
forewarned, josephine attempted to excuse herself as the fish was being served, planning to drop down the laundry chute in the bathroom to a rendezvous with resistance workers below. but goering, his suspicions raised, produced a gun and ordered her to eat the fish before allowing her to retire to a bathroom. josephine managed to reach and use the chute, whereupon her colleagues rushed her to a doctor, who pumped her stomach.
