us navy chaplain joseph o'callahan was the only chaplain to receive the congressional medal of honor during world war ii. he was aboard the carrier franklin just 60 miles from japan on 19 march 1945 when it was hit by two bombs in kamikaze attacks.
the hangar deck immediately became a blazing inferno in which 832 crewmembers died. although wounded by one of the explosions, o'callahan administered the last rites to the dying, comforted the wounded, and led officers and crewmen into the flames to carry hot bombs and shells to the edge of the hangar deck for jettisoning. in the end, "the ship that wouldn't die" sailed unaided more than 12000 miles back to the brooklyn navy yard in new york.
