after his defeat at plataea in 479 bc, xerxes, king of persia, was retreating from greece when his ship, overloaded with persian warriors, was caught in a heavy storm. the king sought counsel from the captain, who announced that their only hope for salvation lay in lightening the vessel's load.
xerxes turned to his men and said, "it is upon you that my safety depends. now let some of you show your regard for your king." at this, a number of men threw themselves overboard.
reaching the harbour, xerxes ordered that a golden crown be presented to the captain for saving his life. he then decreed that the man would lose his head ─ ─ for having caused the loss of so many persian lives.
