in 1518, hernando cortes asked the spanish governor of cuba to sponsor an expedition to mexico. the governor, eager to capture mexico's vast treasures, quickly embraced the scheme and gave cortes eleven ships and 700 men.
in the spring of 1519, after months of travel, cortes landed in vera cruz. as soon as the ships had been unloaded cortes torched the entire fleet to prevent his men from turning back.
though cortes played a vital role in the spanish conquest of mexico and was made a marquis, charles Ⅴ of spain refused to make him governor of mexico. cortes later returned to spain, where, neglected by the court, he died in poverty in 1547.
