in 1862, general grant, commander of the union forces in the american civil war, was deliberating whether or not to attack fort donelson when a deserter from the fort serendipitously appeared in the union camp. among other things, grant learned that the fort's troops had been given six days' rations.
"gentlemen," grant announced, "troops do not have six days' rations served out to them in a fort if they mean to stay there. these men mean to retreat, not to fight. we will attack at once."
grant's capture of the fort marked one of the first major union victories in the civil war, and opened up prime avenues of invasion to the south.
