in november 333 bc, the macedonian troops led by alexander the great, outnumbered roughly by four to one, defeated the army led by darius iii of persia in the battle of issus. darius was forced to flee, leaving behind his chariot, his camp and his family, all of which were captured by alexander.
determined to treat darius' family with the respect fitting their rank, alexander was keen to assure darius' mother sisygambis that her son was still alive. it is said that at their first meeting sisygambis kneeled down in front of hephaestion, thinking that as the taller of the two men he was the king. alexander saved her face by saying, "don't worry, mother, you were not mistaken, for he is alexander too."
