training new recruits in the use of the musket was an indispensable part of soldiering, though rarely can it have been as dangerous as it was for general jean malher of napoleon's army in 1808. putting the recruits through their paces malher ordered them to fire their blanks. unfortunately he got in the way of the volley and was transfixed by a ramrod : eighteen soldiers had failed to remove their ramrods from the barrels before firing.
on another occasion during manoeuvres at leghorn in 1804 a french soldier fired his ramrod, which accidentally killed a civilian spectator. luckily for the soldier the victim turned out to be a brigand wanted by the police.
